To obtain a degree in pharmacy was a four year challenge of school work and internships. Of late, many of the tertiary schools here in Ghana have introduced the new Doctor of Pharmacy course which takes 6 years to be licensed to practice just like with medical doctors.
Graduates get to earn the title ‘doctor’ and get to diagnose and/or prescribe medication. The trend of tertiary schools giving out doctor of pharmacy degrees have caught on and no university wants to be left out.
The University of Cape Coast has released the admission requirements for entry into the Doctor of Pharmacy program. It’s as follows;
FOR WASSCE/SSCE applicants
Students with WASSCE certification are required to make at least credit passes in at least 6 subjects, with the total aggregate of 36 for those with WASSCE certification, and 24 for those with the SSSCE.
The passes required should be in 3 core subjects and three elective subjects. The core subjects to pass are English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science. A pass in Social Studies does not count or matter in the evaluation of the student’s eligibility.
The 3 elective subjects that have to be passed to qualify for admission are Biology, Physics or Elective Mathematics and Chemistry.
Moreover, it is very good to note that when we mention about a pass in a subject, it refers to results from A1 to C6 for WASSCE students, and A to D for SSSCE students
GCE ‘A’ Level
Students with the General Certificate of Education Advanced Level should have 5 passes which include English and Maths and other 3 Science subjects like Biology, Chemistry and Elective Maths or Physics.
Conclusion
Scoring passes in these aforementioned subjects makes you eligible to apply for the Doctor of Pharmacy course. However, after application, your actual chances of being admitted into the course structure depends on how strong your passes are, the general competitiveness of the applying batch of students and number of students the University is willing to take.
Since this is a course many bright students might want to take a shot at, it is really necessary to make as many good passes as necessary to increase your chances of being selected. Also, note that the Doctor of Pharmacy course is a first choice only course and should be treated as such.
